Spot colours are the right choice when:
- You have a brand colour that must be consistent across every print run, every year

- You need a colour that falls outside the CMYK gamut — certain fluorescents, metallics, or very precise brand shades
- You're printing on a non-white substrate where process inks might behave unpredictably

Graphic colours: A term worth clarifying
"Graphic colours" isn't a formal print-industry term in the way CMYK or Pantone are, but you'll encounter it in design software and some print specifications. It generally refers to flat, solid colours used in graphic elements — logos, icons, backgrounds, and text blocks — as distinct from photographic or photorealistic content.
Why does the distinction matter? Because graphic colours are where colour-matching problems most often show up. A flat block of colour is unforgiving: if your brand's navy blue shifts slightly across different print runs or different suppliers, it's immediately obvious. Photographic colour variation, by contrast, tends to be far less noticeable.
If your artwork contains both photography and strong graphic colour blocks — a common situation for corporate brochures — a good printer will discuss whether a hybrid approach makes sense: CMYK for the imagery, and a spot ink for the critical brand colour.
